Marci Mayer Eisen, MSW, ACC is Director of the Millstone Institute at the Jewish Federation of St. Louis She has a BS in Family Studies from Penn State, MSW in group work from Yeshiva University, Certificate in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from UMSL and is an alum of both Leadership St. Louis and Women in Leadership. A native of Philadelphia, Marci previously coordinated inter-faith social justice programs for the JCRC and spent the majority of her career at the St. Louis Jewish Community Center leading parenting programs and community events while working with hundreds of volunteer committees. She presents on the subject of group dynamics, committee engagement and community building.

We asked Marci a series of questions. 

1. How long have you been a coach and where did you train?
I was first exposed to coaching when I brought in Deborah Grayson Riegel, MSW, PCC from New York to facilitate several cohorts of coaching skills training for my work at Jewish Federation of St. Louis.  Since my orientation is community building and group dynamics, I wasn’t immediately drawn to coaching.  However, I quickly saw the impact of coaching and knew I wanted to embrace these skills.  I attended the six-day College of Executive Coaching in December 2015, received their certification through their continuing requirements and received my ACC this past May.

2. What was the biggest surprise you experienced about being trained as a coach?
I was surprised that coaching was life changing professionally and personally.  Every day I find “coachable moments” with people I work with, as well as close friends and family.

3. What led you to ICF St. Louis, and what are the benefits you receive by being a member? 
I started attending chapter meetings right after my initial training and found the members to be outgoing, sincere and dedicated.  I attended the Midwest ICF conference in 2016 and am attending Converge August 2017, the international ICF conference in DC.

4. Who do you love to serve and why?
I primarily use coaching in my current position as Director of the Millstone Institute and staff for JProStl, initiatives of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis focused on professional and volunteer leadership development and board training.  I especially enjoy using the coaching skills when I partner with staff and board leaders to empower them to strategize how to lead successful teams and reach new goals. I am also proud that through the Millstone Institute, we’re bringing Deborah back this November for cohorts 7,8 & 9. Deborah provides an amazing dynamic learning experience and powerful exposure to coaching which is open to the general community –  I facilitate the follow-up ongoing sessions to help the participants advance their skills and have also developed an experiential workshop, “A Taste of Coaching” that I have led for several groups.

5. What one recommendation would you make to prospective coaches considering entering our profession?

Experience coaching first-hand and find the right ICF certified program that fits your learning style.

6. Who are some of the people in our profession that have influenced you very positively?

In addition to Deborah Grayson Riegel, I received support from my friend Scott Brown, M.A., PCC and our own Nicki McClusky, PCC, BCC, was a valued mentor coach who gave me the skills and confidence to get the ACC certification.  Also, I had several fabulous instructors and classmates from the College of Executive Coaching who trained and inspired me, including classmate Kavita Carlson, LCSW, who became a close friend and helped me on the coaching journey.
